Senate To Begin Considering Transportation Funding Bill

Now that the House of Delegates has approved it, the Senate will begin considering the transportation funding bill this week. The Senate Budget and Taxation Committee will hold a hearing today on the bill. The measure includes automatic annual increases in the state’s gasoline excise tax which would be linked to inflation. The measure also phases in a sales tax on gasoline over a four-year period.  However, part of that sales tax could be replaced by a sales tax on online purchases, of Congress allows it. Legislative analysts say the legislation would increase taxes on gasoline by at least 20-cents-a-gallon over four years.  Delegates approved a different version of the bill than the one Governor Martin O'Malley introduced three weeks ago. There is no indication as to when the full Senate will vote on the bill- however Senate President Mike Miller says he is confident a transportation bill has enough votes…
