Now that the House of Delegates has approved it, the Senate will begin considering the transportation funding bill this week. The Senate Budget and Taxation Committee will hold a hearing today on the bill. The measure includes automatic annual increases in the state’s gasoline excise tax which would be linked to inflation. The measure also phases in a sales tax on gasoline over a four-year period. However, part of that sales tax could be replaced by a sales tax on online purchases, of Congress allows it. Legislative analysts say the legislation would increase taxes on gasoline by at least 20-cents-a-gallon over four years. Delegates approved a different version of the bill than the one Governor Martin O'Malley introduced three weeks ago.
