Several Political Seats Without Candidates in Upcoming June Elections

November 24th, 2021 by WCBC Radio

The deadline to file to run for political office in Maryland is less than three months away- and to date there are no candidates for the Allegany County Board of Education;  just two for county commissioner; and no candidates for mayor in Cumberland. All three commissioners seats are up for election with incumbent Commissioner Creade Brodie Jr having filed, along with Republican Todd Logsdon. Incumbent commissioner David Caporale has not filed but is expected to run again; while Commissioner Jake Shade has opted to seek the state senate seat being vacated by George Edwards. Delegate Mike Mckay has also filed to run for the senate seat. Those decisions by Shade and Mckay- along with the planned retirements of Edwards and Delegate Wendell Beitzel have changed the political dynamic significantly- leaving one commissioners seat wide open and no incumbents in the House 1-A and 1-C  contests.  In Cumberland, Mayor Ray Morriss has indicated he plans to seek re-election but has not yet filed. The city council seats held by Rock Cioni and Joe George are up for grabs- and so far just one name is on the council ballot: Chris Myers. Board of Education seats held by Deb Frank, Robert Farrell and David Bohn are up for election-  but no one is on file at this time. There are a slew of incumbent candidates who have filed- seeking re election- and currently unopposed. Those include: Sheriff Craig Robertson; States Attorney James Elliot; Clerk of Circuit Court Dawne Lindsey; and Register of Wills Mary Beth Pirolozzi. One local resident is on file for Maryland’s Sixth District Congressional seat: Robert Poisonnier,  a retired law enforcement officer who resides in LaVale. Deadline to file is February 22nd with Maryland’s Primary set for June 28th.
