Shade Expects A Decision On Allegany Co. Opportunity Scholarship In The Near Future

A proposal to phase out the Allegany County Opportunity Scholarship created a storm of controversy and finger pointing last month- but the hope is now that the program will be retained.  Allegany County receives annually 3.75% of the electronic gaming revenue from the Rocky Gap Casio Resort. A portion of the money is subsequently given to area nonprofits, including the Opportunity Scholarship Program. The idea of dropping the program first surfaced in late January when members of the Western Maryland Legislative Delegation said that the 15-member Local Development Council had made a decision to discontinue the scholarship and target more money toward fire and rescue units. That report caused some controversy with LDC members claiming it was not the Council’s decision- that the County Commissioners make the call. The commissioners suggested the delegation was largely involved in the decision. During a public session last week, County Commissioners President Jake Shade told Allegany College officials that he expects a final decision in the near future…

    Spoke with a member of the LDC this weekend and they said the scholarship discontinuation was from the Western Maryland Delegation, and McKay specifically. Time he goes back to cleaning shirts full-time.
