Smoking Ban Being Considered For Downtown Mall

October 28th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

With a renewed focus on reducing the number of vagrants and panhandlers on the downtown mall- there is growing momentum toward implementing a smoking ban as one measure that could improve the atmosphere. Several who spoke at a meeting last week raised the idea of banning smoking including Downtown Development Commission Chair Sandi Saville- although she noted that she was speaking as an individual- having not discussed any such proposals with the DDC board.  Mike Cohen, city attorney, told Saville the DDC might want to consider looking into it…

Oh sure, this will fix everything. Funny how we can find the will to ban smoking but no stomach for banning what really needs banned. The bums. And for you do-gooders out there, if you are thinking banning smoking equals getting rid of the panhandlers and vagrants or what ever other political correct name you want to use, that is stereo typing and stereo typing is wrong.

      > Having witnessed a couple of vagrants lounging on the mall, who both aggressively smoked and littered the area they were in with 20 or more cigarette butts, banning smoking would likely cause them to move. One was extremely rude and aggressive when a patrol car stopped and told him he could not sleep on the bench on Centre street. I’m not stereotyping – these folks are creating a problem – bigly.

      > So, we’re going to reintroduce vehicle exhaust but ban cigarette smoke? Makes perfect sense.
