State & Local Governments Closed for Christmas

December 25th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

Although police and emergency services will be on duty, most others associated with government will have Christmas Day off, along with most working in local business.  That includes Allegany Transit vans and buses.  Everything is due to get back to normal on Thursday, but there are some businesses which have closed for the week, so call ahead.

Police in our area have beefed up patrols in an effort to keep drunk, drugged and aggressive drivers in check during the Christmas holiday.  Our thanks go out to those officers who are spending time away from their families.  Early on, there was the report of a fatality on Interstate 70 in Frederick County Tuesday morning near Harmony Road.

The Maryland Department of Transportation's State Highway Administration will keep lanes open so holiday travelers can get to their destinations quickly and safely.  Non-emergency lane closures are suspended through 10 pm Friday.  That will also be in effect from 5 am on New Years Eve until 10 pm on January 2, 2020.

Although we're celebrating the Christmas Holiday, in short order it will be time to take the tree down and dispose of it.  Allegany County has set tree drop off through January 26, with the caveat that all decorations have to be removed and flocked trees are not accepted.  A schedule for tree recycling has been posted on the county website.

Whenever families are on the road for any holiday, there is always a concern about weather conditions.  Although we won't have a white Christmas, there is an advantage in that travel shouldn't be complicated.  There is no precipitation in the forecast until Saturday evening, and at that point it's expected to be rain, with temperatures above freezing.
