State superintendent optimistic about timetable for in-person learning

September 2nd, 2020 by WCBC Radio

After hours of debate Tuesday, the Maryland State Board of Education passed a motion that will mandate an average of three-and-a-half hours of active, on-camera instruction during the school day. Under the motion, schools are required to be open for at least 180 school days and provide six hours of learning each day. The motion also requires half-day pre-kindergarten classes to have at least 1.5 hours of on-camera instruction spread across the day. State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Karen Salmon says she remains optimistic that kids can return to the classrooms sooner rather than later, and she looks forward to visiting school systems across the state in the coming weeks to get an up-close look at each system’s progress…

No Jay, it’s the unions not the teachers everyone hates. This is the reason why that extra $600. per week was a bad Idea and an extra $400. isn’t very good either, people tend to become complacent.

Teachers are most likely drawing full salary in any event, does anyone know ? Of course if you can answer that, it will tell me where you work.

Teachers drew and are drawing their full salary as they should. Teachers continued to work after the kids were on distance learning and will continue to work as school starts. They have this thing called a contract.

The 600 or 400 has nothing to do with teachers. Unions are necessary in just about any profession that employs thousands of people. Collective bargain is invaluable in terms of securing fair pay and benefits. Are you against the oil company workers, GM, or any other factory workers having unions to negotiate for them and to give them protection from unfair treatment?
