Still No Agreement Between Firefighters and City

No agreement was reached following an all day mediation session last week  between the city of Cumberland and the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1715, who have been locked in a contract dispute over staffing levels for more than a year. According to reports, the meetings between city officials and the union, which have been going on regularly for several months, are court-ordered negotiations with a federal mediator present. A key issue the city and union have been deadlocked over is the staffing levels for the firefighters for each eight-hour shift in each 24-hour period. The union says that 13 employees are needed for each eight-hour shift to operate the equipment in a safe and effective manner. Local 1715 President Ken Mckenzie…
