Suspect Arrested

On Monday afternoon, 03/12/2012, the West Virginia State Police arrested 29 year old William Alan Ault, of Ridgeley, West Virginia, after a warrant for his arrest had been obtained by Investigators with the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I). Ault was wanted in connection with a Robbery which occurred at Penny’s One Stop Convenience Store in Bel-Air, Allegany County, Maryland.

On Saturday, 03/10/2012, at approximately 10:25 P.M., the Allegany County Sheriff’s Department, along with members of the Maryland State Police responded to Penny’s One Stop Convenience Store for a reported robbery. During the course of the investigation, it was learned that a lone male suspect approached the clerk and asked for change for a one (1) dollar bill.  After the clerk opened the cash register, the suspect reached over the counter and removed an undisclosed amount of cash from the register.  The suspect exited the business and fled from the area on foot and was last seen running towards Bel-Air Plaza.  A search for the suspect was conducted; however he was not located on the night of the crime.  No one was injured and no weapon was displayed during this robbery.

The store’s video surveillance was reviewed, and video of the suspect was obtained. A still photo of the suspect was provided to the media for publication.

Numerous tips from citizens were received by law enforcement after the photo appeared in the media. Numerous interviews were conducted with witnesses in Allegany and Mineral County.  With the assistance of the West Virginia State Police, Mineral County Sheriff’s Department and Keyser’s Police Department, Ault was developed as a suspect.

Ault has been charged with Robbery and Theft.  He is incarcerated in West Virginia pending extradition to Maryland.

The investigation is continuing by the Allegany County Sheriff’s Department and C3I.
