UPDATED: Garrett County Courthouse Evacuated Due To Suspicious Mail

UPDATE:  A hazardous materials team from Somerset County has determine the white powder to be harmless.

The Garrett County Courthouse will reopen at 8:30 AM Tuesday.

1 PM UPDATE:

The Garrett County Courthouse was evacuated this morning, and remains closed to the public after an envelope containing an unknown white power was opened.

WCBC News has learned that a handwritten note containing the words:  "Praise Allah" accompanied the letter.

The envelope and its contents are reportedly being sent to a lab in Somerset, Pennsylvania, for testing.

Those in the vicinity of where the envelope was opened have been taken to Garrett Regional Medical Center for observation and treatment, if it becomes necessary.

The Garrett County Sheriff's Office has released the following statement:

On June 18, 2018, the Garrett County Sheriff's Office was made aware of a suspicious envelope that was received at the Circuit Court Clerks Office at the Garrett County Courthouse.

The suspicious envelope contained an unknown white powder as well as a hand written note. The scene is currently being processed by the Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigtaion Division as well as the countys hazardous materials team.

All civilians and employees within the operations side of the courthouse have been evacuated until the scene has been cleared by the Maryland Department of Environment.
