Swanton Resident Takes Issue With Prayer

Back in 2007, Swanton resident Jeffrey Davis took the Allegany County Commissioners to task for their role in having a monument to the Ten Commandments displayed in front of the Circuit Court building on Washington Street- arguing that a more appropriate display would be a copy of the Constitution.  Davis now has taken issue with the brief prayer that County Commissioners President Mike McKay recites at the start of each public meeting. McKay began the practice shortly after taking office. He says it’s a personal prayer- and its not a policy or decision of the commission. Davis, citing a Supreme Court ruling, says that secular prayers should not be part of a county government meeting…
