The River and Rails Festival returns to Canal Place

August 9th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

The Second Annual River and Rails Festival is a celebration of the rich transportation focused heritage of the local area and of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad’s continued service to our community. This free festival also kicks off the fundraiser for the River Park at Canal Place, River project.  The River Park at Canal Place will be a tourism game changer for the city of Cumberland and Allegany County. Once completed the park will consist of canoe/kayak access, fishing access, whitewater features, viewing areas, and a trail connection from Canal Place to the YMCA. This project is now in its second phase and work continues to make this park a reality for the area.

Can “Tire Fest,” “Fabric Fest” and of course “Paper Fest” be far behind?

From another story on the Scenic RR on this website:

Tthere are issues of steadily deteriorating track and right-of-way conditions, standard coach experience factors and resulting declining coach ridership. Developing landslide areas alongside the trail, need to be addressed before the crisis stage fully emerges, which is described as inevitable given the developing evidence the firm experienced firsthand. There were also concerns expressed about the financial accounting- noting that written statements of the railroad’s accounting firm appear to be more concealing than revealing- with a lack of clear language.
