Time Running Out For BOE To Have A System Wide Security Plan In Place

Time is running out for the Allegany County Board of Education to have a comprehensive system wide school security plan in place prior to the start of the next school year. In February, Board member Mike Llewellyn stressed the importance, following the Sandy Hook tragedy, of having a new plan in place- saying that such an event could happen anywhere at anytime. Robert Farrell, the board’s coordinator of safety, security and risk management, is part of a committee appointed several months ago- coordinated by Sheriff Craig Robertson and former Cumberland Police Chief Bobby Dick. Farrell reports that four meetings have taken place to date, and later this month Robertson will travel to Sandy Hook Connecticut to meet with the chief of police there. Llewellyn said it’s imperative that some plan be in place prior to kids returning to school in late August. Farrell said he believes most of the elements of a plan are in place and can come together fairly quickly…
