Traffic Stop Turns into Foot Chase

October 5th, 2011 by WCBC Radio

On Tuesday at approximately 7:51PM, TFC. Shaffer conducted a traffic stop on a white 1997 Buick Le Sabre for suspended registration plates.  The vehicle stopped on Edgewood Circle E/O Edgewood Road.  The driver did not have any identification on him and gave sketchy information to lead TFC Shaffer to believe he was using a false name.  After detecting an odor of an alcoholic beverage from the driver’s breathe, TFC. Shaffer attempted to conduct Standardized Field Sobriety Tests.  At this point the driver fled from the scene on foot.

The driver ran on foot through the Hampton Inn Hotel towards the back of the Edgewood Circle apartments.  The driver attempted to gain entry into one of the apartments, at which point a Washington County Deputy utilized his Taser on the driver. The driver was then subdued and taken into custody without further incident.  It was later determined that the apartment he attempted to gain entry into was his girlfriend’s sister’s.

The driver was arrested at the scene and evaluated by EMS.  He was then transported to the Washington County Central Booking for processing and to determine his identity, which he refused to produce. The suspect was subsequently fingerprinted which revealed his true identity to be Christopher Anthony Reid B/M 36 yoa.  Mr. Reid was found to have open warrants through New York for weapons charges and Washington County for disorderly conduct.   Mr. Reid was charged with Driving Under the Influence, Fleeing and eluding, resisting arrest, giving a false and fictitious name to a law enforcement officer, hindering an investigation and numerous other traffic violations.

TFC Shaffer and Deputy Izat both received minor injuries during the foot pursuit.  Both were treated at Meritus Medical Center and released.

Mr. Reid is awaiting an initial appearance with the court commissioner.
