Transgender Case Sets New Maryland Treatment Standards

September 24th, 2015 by WCBC Radio

The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services has been ordered by an administrative law judge to provide better training on how to treat transgender inmates.

A suit was brought by Neon Brown, who goes by the name "Sandy."  Brown said guards watched her shower and was called "it" and "some kind of animal."

The incident happened at Patuxent early last year.  The ruling said there was a violation of the Federal Prison Rape Elimination Act.  DPSCS says it has already addressed the issue since the complaint was filed.
