No real surprises were part of the city of Cumberland’s proposed FY 2021 budget outlined this week – although like everything else- there are many unknowns relating to COVID-19. Ken Tressler, city comptroller, conducted a budget workshop Tuesday and there were no significant changes from the presentation made two weeks earlier. A water rate hike of 5% was announced by the city at a May 5th budget session and that remains in place as it is a continuation of a three year annual increase initiated in 2018. The biggest unknown according to Tressler, remains the impact of the Coronavirus. Initial estimates are more than $830,000 in losses thus far- but more definite numbers will be known in the coming weeks…

Yeah!!!, 5% more on the water bill. The water and sewer side of the ledger sheet is flush (pardon the pun). You can bet Mr Kelly and Co. are already plotting how to get their hands on some of that money. Oh and BTW, I noticed the gas Co now wants their rate increase to get paid AGAIN for their maintenance work as well. Would love to see a REAL reporter do some research and see how many times in the past 20 years a rate increase was granted under the name of investing in system upgrades and maintenance.

Maybe they can raise the rates 10% instead and use the funds to get several different colors of brick on the new mall?? ( I may regret suggesting that)
