Today, Congressman David Trone (MD-06) announced $170 million in funding for the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), an increase of $5 million from the previous year’s funding from Congress.
ARC funds projects in the Appalachian Region to promote economic development, education and job training, critical infrastructure, and community development. This funding includes $10 million to develop workforce reentry strategies for those recovering from a substance use disorder and $10 million to spur high-speed broadband deployment.
“Over the past six months, I heard from so many people in Western Maryland about the importance of the Appalachian Regional Commission. That’s why I’m happy to announce that this year we secured additional funding for this economic development engine,” said Congressman Trone. “ARC funding helps create thousands of new jobs, support those in recovery from substance abuse, and invest in broadband and infrastructure to secure the long-term success of the region.
“This funding is a perfect example of how the federal government can partner with state and local organizations to help the community and boost the economy. I’m happy we were able to secure more funding for ARC this year, and I will continue to fight for additional investments that benefit Western Maryland.”
ARC is a regional economic development agency that represents a partnership of federal, state, and local governments. Established by an act of Congress in 1965, ARC is composed of the governors of the 13 Appalachian states and a federal co-chair. Each year, the ARC provides funding for several hundred projects in the Appalachian Region in areas such as business development, education and job training, telecommunications, infrastructure, community development, housing, and transportation.
