July 18th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

The Cumberland Times News reports a 55-year-old Grantsville man was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital Wednesday afternoon after he was struck in the head by a tree limb in Garrett County, according to the Maryland State Police.

Joseph W. Colmer was reportedly unconscious following the accident that occurred shortly after noon, prompting alert of Bittinger and Accident volunteer fire departments, Garrett County fire/EMS and the Maryland State Police Trooper 5 medevac helicopter.

The accident occurred when the victim was struck by a limb of a tree while he was cutting another tree, according to Capt. Melissa Scarborough, Natural Resources Police spokeswoman.

The helicopter was used to lower a paramedic and equipment to first responders on the ground, who were able to access the wooded area of Savage River State Forest off Bowman Hill Road. The helicopter was then flown from the immediate area to allow for ground crews to stabilize the victim and not be subjected to excessive wind from its rotor.

A short time later, Trooper 5 returned to the scene to hoist the victim and paramedic for transport to the Morgantown, West Virginia, hospital.

The victim's condition was not known Thursday.
