Trump Approves Disaster Declaration For Maryland Flooding

July 3rd, 2018 by WCBC Radio

The president has approved a disaster declaration for the May flooding in Maryland.

Flooding in Ellicott City's historic downtown destroyed property and led to the death of a National Guardsman who was swept away while trying to help a woman.

Maryland's Congressional delegation and Gov. Larry Hogan sought the declaration. It makes federal funding available to state and local governments and some nonprofits for emergency work in Baltimore and Howard counties.

Damage to infrastructure was estimated at $10.5 million in Howard County, $8.6 million in Baltimore County and $3 million in Baltimore.

Issued Monday, the president's declaration reads:

"Today, President Donald J. Trump declared that a major disaster exists in the state of Maryland and ordered federal assistance to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the areas affected by a severe storm and flooding from May 27 to May 28, 2018.

"Federal funding is available to the state and to eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe storm flooding in the counties of Baltimore and Howard.

"Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.

"Brock Long, Administrator, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Department of Homeland Security, named Emily Breslin as the Federal Coordinating Officer for Federal recovery operations in the affected areas.

"Additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments."
