Trump, Sanders win mock student primary election

In preparation for the upcoming Maryland Primary Election on April 26th, Allegany County Public School students in grades 9-12 had the opportunity in English classes to participate in a mock primary election. Students chose to vote as either Democrats or Republicans. Approximately 2,500 students were eligible to cast a vote. The results were tallied and are as follows:

 

President of the United States

  • 58% of Republican student voters selected Donald Trump (30% Ted Cruz, 12% John Kasich)
  • 88.8% of Democrat student voters selected Bernie Sanders (11.2% Hillary Clinton)

Representative in Congress

  • 23% of Republican student voters selected Robin Ficker (22% Terry Baker, 19% Amie Hoeber, 14% Frank Howard, 7% David Vogt, III, 6% Harold Painter, 5% Christopher Mason, 4% Scott Cheng)
  • 77.2% of Democrat student voters selected John Delaney (22.8% Tony Puca)

Judge of the Circuit Court

  • 70% of Republican student voters selected George McKinley (30% Jeffrey Getty)
  • 64.8% of Democrat student voters selected George McKinley (35.2% Jeffrey Getty)

U.S. Senator

  • 21% of Republican student voters selected Sean Connor (15% Richard Douglas, 10% Dave Wallace, 10% Joseph Hooe, 9% Kathy Szeliga, 8% Chris Chaffee, 8% Greg Holmes, 5% Lynn Richardson, 4% Mark McNicholas, 4% Anthony Seda, 2% John Graziani, 2% Chrys Kefalas, 2% Garry Yarrington, 0% Rich Shawver)
  • 16.8% of Democrat student voters selected Freddie Dickson, Jr. (14.4% Donna Edwards, 12.3% Blaine Taylor, 11.1% Chris Van Hollen, 9.9% Violet Staley, 9.7% Lih Young, 8.3% Ralph Jaffe, 6.5% Teresa Scaldaferri, 5.9% Charles Smith, 5.1% Ed Tinus)
