Two Killed In I-68 Accident Near WV Line

    Saturday evening at 6:45 PM, the McHenry Barrack of Maryland State Police received a call for a motor vehicle collision on W/B I-68 at the 3 mm, at Friendsville.  Troopers arrived on scene and found a single vehicle collision with the driver ejected from the vehicle on the right shoulder. The vehicle was a 2005 Subaru Baja.  The patient was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV by Stat Medevac of Connellsville, Pennsylvania.  The driver of that vehicle was pronounced dead at Ruby Memorial Hospital and was identified as Ernest Frederick Cooke Jr., 65 yoa, of Morgantown, WV.

    A second and separate collision occurred on E/B I-68 at the 1 mm, Friendsville, Garrett County, Maryland at 1926 hrs.  Preliminary investigation revealed traffic was stopped on E/B I-68 at the 3 mm in order to land the medevac for the above collision.  While traffic was stopped, a Jeep Grand Cherokee, struck the rear of a Toyota Sienna van.  The van then struck a BMW 525i which struck a Ford Focus.  The Ford Focus then struck the rear of a tractor trailer belonging to Barse Trucking of Riverview, Florida.  The driver and passenger from the Jeep Grand Cherokee, BMW, and all occupants from the Toyota Sienna were transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV.  One occupant (Kalie Michelle Ashby, 26 yoa, of Oakland, MD) of the Toyota Sienna was pronounced deceased at Ruby Memorial Hospital.  The occupants of the Ford Focus and Tractor Trailer were not transported.  The investigation continues for both collisions. 

     Troopers were assisted by the Friendsville Volunteer Fire Department, Grantsville Volunteer Fire Department, Northern Garrett Rescue Squad, and Maryland State Highway Administration.
