Ty Johnson Day set for Monday

May 3rd, 2019 by WCBC Radio

Former Fort Hill High School and University of Maryland great, Ty Johnson will have his own Ty Johnson Day in Downtown Cumberland, Monday, May 6. Coordinated by the Mayor and City Council with Downtown Cumberland Business Association (DBCA) and the Downtown Development Commission (DDC), Hometown Proud Ty Johnson Day will culminate in a celebration from 3:30-5:30 on the McCoury Family Stage, Baltimore Street.

Johnson has been drafted by the Detroit Lions in the sixth round of the NFL draft. The running back is a 2015 graduate of Fort Hill and 2018 graduate of the University of Maryland. As a Fort Hill Sentinel, he played on two state championship teams in football and one in track and field.

In his four years at the University of Maryland, he rushed for more than 2,600 yards and 17 touchdowns, as well as, two receiving touchdowns and two kickoff returns for touchdowns.

“We’re very proud of this young man,” commented Mayor Ray Morriss. “Not only has he been exceptional on the field, he’s been exceptional in the classroom and is a great role model for our youth. I’m sure the whole city wishes him well. We are definitely hometown proud of Ty Johnson.”

A poster will be available for well-wishers to sign, as a send off gift to Johnson. One hundred smaller versions of the poster will be available for free to the public.
