UPDATE: Fatal Collision on Rt. 40

July 7th, 2012 by WCBC Radio

On 7/06/2012 at approximately 1:35 p.m., units from MSP Hagerstown, as well as Fire and Rescue Personnel from Mt. Aetna, Myersville, Boonsboro and Community Rescue Service responded to U.S. Route 40 in front of the Greenbrier State Park entrance just east of the Frederick County line for a reported serious injury collision.  Investigation revealed that a 2006 Honda Civic, driven by Cheron Nicole Leighton, 34, of Baltimore, Maryland, was traveling out of Greenbrier Park and began to turn eastbound towards Frederick.  After proceeding out of the driveway/merge lane onto eastbound Rt 40, Leighton decided to turn and proceed west, effectively making a u-turn.  The Honda Civic then turned in front of a 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe which had been traveling eastbound (driven by Carroll Augustus Coleman Jr., 55, of Hagerstown, MD).  The Tahoe then struck the Civic, causing the Civic to spin several times.

Leighton and a passenger in the Civic, Tiara Shaniece Elliott, 23, of Baltimore, MD, where ejected from the vehicle as it spun. Leighton was flown by MSP Helicopter to Baltimore Shock Trauma with serious injuries.  Elliott was transported by Ambulance to Meritus Medical Center, where she was later pronounced deceased.  A second passenger in the Civic, Troy Roberson, 31, of Baltimore, was not ejected, and was transported to Meritus Medical Center and is being treated for serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Coleman was the only occupant in the Tahoe and declined treatment on scene. The investigation is continuing.  No charges have been filed at this time.
