Update on Proposed Overlook at Folck’s Mill

An update on a Civil War project was one of the highlights of the final meeting of 2016 for the Allegany County Commissioners. The Maryland State Highway Administration is planning to create a scenic overlook at a Civil War battle site east of Cumberland.  Folck’s Mill, a former grist mill and sawing facility, was the scene of a Civil War clash between Union and Confederate regiments on Aug. 1, 1864. The commissioners voted to support the state decision to design and create the overlook for Folck’s Mill, located at the juncture of Mason Road and Interstate 68. Steve Young, a member of the Allegany County Civil War Roundtable and former county employee, spoke at the meeting about the clash at Folck’s Mill which he says is often referred to as the “Battle of Cumberland” …
