UPDATE: Rumors of a student with gun at Mountain Ridge Investigated

March 6th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

On Tuesday, March 6, 2018, the Frostburg City Police School Resource Officer at Mountain Ridge High School was alerted by a student about a rumor that a student at the school might be in possession of a firearm. An investigation was immediately conducted by the Frostburg City Police Department and school administrators. Several persons of interest were quickly identified and interviewed in connection with the rumor. In addition, searches of specific students and their lockers and property were conducted in connection with the investigation. The investigation revealed that there was no sustained information that a firearm was on the school property, and no firearm was discovered during the course of the investigation.

During the investigation, however, police and school administrators learned that on Saturday, March 3, 2018, a juvenile student met two other juveniles in the parking lot of Mountain Ridge High School and showed them two airsoft guns. Airsoft guns are modeled after real firearms and discharge air propelled plastic BBs. These students and their parents were contacted during the investigation, and they were not found to possess any weapon or air soft gun during school hours or activities. Officers visited the homes of the individuals, contacted parents, and verified that they possessed only airsoft guns.

The investigation did not find any evidence of a threat to students or staff at Mountain Ridge High School nor was evidence found showing any threat of violence or indication that a real firearm had been on school property.

Any disciplinary action against the students involved with bringing the airsoft guns onto school property will be handled by school administrators.

Frostburg City Police and school administrators were assisted at the school by Maryland State Police.
