Upgrades planned for U.S. 219

May 12th, 2017 by WCBC Radio

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is beginning an intersection improvement project at US 219 (Third Street) and Center Street in Oakland, Garrett County.  The $140,000 project will begin Friday and be complete early-summer, weather permitting.

Construction crews will raise the profile of US 219 by six inches, which will eliminate the bump at the Center Street intersection, improving safety.  MDOT SHA will also upgrade sidewalks at the intersection to meet federal Americans with Disability Act (ADA) requirements and resurface and restripe the intersection and approaches of US 219 at Center Street.

Crews will close on lane and direct motorists using a flagging operation and cones and barrels Mondays through Fridays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.  Weather permitting, next week, crews will close the intersection at 9 a.m. for paving operations.  All lanes will open by 3 p.m.  Motorists will be directed to S. Second Street, which runs parallel to Third Street, as the detour.  MDOT SHA’s contractor for the project is Pessoa Construction Company of Fairmount Heights.

The e-Road Ready 2017 electronic construction brochure is now available by clicking here.  The e-brochure highlights major road construction and maintenance projects in each of MDOT SHA’s seven engineering districts which cover Maryland’s 23 counties.

Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely.
