Van Hollen in Western Maryland

On Thursday, August 8, 2019 U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen will spend the day in Western Maryland where he will participate in the groundbreaking of the C&O Canal Headquarters in Williamsport – a project that the Senator has worked to support since his time in the House of Representatives. Following the groundbreaking, he will visit the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts as part of the national ‘Invite Congress to Museum week.’ Senator Van Hollen will also tour the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics (PIA) in Hagerstown and Dynamic Automotive in Frederick. During these visits, the Senator will discuss his recently introduced Long-Term Unemployment Elimination Act, legislation that would support workforce training programs, such as those at PIA and Dynamic Automotive.

 

 

10:00 am – Groundbreaking Ceremony for New C&O Canal Headquarters

Senator Van Hollen will join Senator Cardin, Governor Hogan, Congressman Trone and other officials for a ceremony marking the groundbreaking of the new C&O Canal Headquarters and the completion of the Conococheague Aqueduct. Senator Van Hollen pushed for the Canal Headquarters to be located in Williamsport and worked with the town, county, and National Park Service to facilitate this partnership.

12:00 pm –Washington County Museum of Fine Arts Visit

As part of the national ‘Invite Congress to Museum week,’ Senators Van Hollen and Cardin will tour the Washington Country Museum of Fine Arts. They will visit the Museum’s galleries and collections spaces and learn more about their work. Senator Van Hollen is a strong supporter of grant programs that support the Museum – including those from the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

1:30 pm –  Tour of Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics

 Senator Van Hollen will tour the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics (PIA), the only nonprofit trade school for aviation mechanics in Maryland. During the tour, the Senator will meet with PIA administrators, teachers, and students, and will speak about his support for workforce training programs, including updates to aviation workforce training as part of the Federal Aviation Act reauthorization. Senator Van Hollen has consistently fought to grow and expand workforce training programs, including through the recent introduction of his Long-Term Unemployment Elimination Act.  This legislation would support programs that provide opportunities and training for long-term unemployed individuals seeking work.

3:30 pm – Tour of Dynamic Automotive
Senator Van Hollen will tour local business Dynamic Automotive, where he will learn more about their operations and apprenticeship programs. During the tour, the Senator will meet with company CEO Dwayne Meyers as well as current employees and apprentices. Senator Van Hollen will discuss his support for apprenticeship programs and work he is doing to expand these opportunities, including through the introduction of the Long-Term Unemployment Elimination Act.
