Vehicle Crash Leads To DUI arrest

At approximately 2:15 p.m., the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence located at1101 E. First Street in reference to a motor vehicle crash.  Upon the officers arrival they observed a Dodge Ram pickup truck positioned in the yard of this residence with the operator, Stephen Allan Smyth standing outside of the vehicle.  Smyth stated that he was backing his truck down Utah Avenue and when he attempted to apply the brakes to stop he applied the accelerator by accident.  Smyth stated that when he did this he lost control of the vehicle, traveled into the yard, struck the corner of the residence, struck a Toyota pickup truck causing the truck to strike a trailer.  The house, truck and trailer all sustained damage.

While officers were speaking with Smyth they could detect an odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Smyth.  Smyth admitted to consuming alcoholic beverages prior to driving his vehicle.  Smyth agreed to take field sobriety tests.  Smyth was then arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.  Smyth was not injured.

Smyth was transported to Police Headquarters for processing and was issued several citations charging him with driving under the influence of alcohol, unsafe backing, negligent driving, and failure to control speed to avoid a collision.
