The purchase of NewPage will create opportunities in a tough worldwide paper market, said officials with Verso Corp., in a conference call Friday. The Luke paper mill, along with each of the eight mills now owned by Verso, was mentioned by name by David J. Paterson, Verso’s president and chief executive officer, who was discussing the financial results of Verso over the past year. The results didn’t include last year’s results for NewPage, which have not been released yet.The future of the company was a topic of Paterson’s comments. The merger and integration of NewPage mills is going very well, Paterson said. Paterson was joined in the conference call by Robert P Mundy, the company’s senior vice president and chief financial officer. Verso owns the Luke mill, which employs about 800 people. Verso and NewPage, the former owner of the Luke mill, merged in January.
