West Virginia health officials say residents affected by devastating floods in June have received $4.7 million in federal aid to buy food. The state Department of Health and Human Resources announced the totals Tuesday for the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The aid was available in the 12 declared disaster counties of Clay, Fayette, Greenbrier, Jackson, Kanawha, Lincoln, Monroe, Nicholas, Pocahontas, Roane, Summers and Webster. The program gave $3.8 million to 43,700 people already eligible for traditional SNAP benefits. Almost 4,800 residents who aren't normally eligible for SNAP received about $812,500.
Applications for the assistance were accepted from July 25 through July 31.
The June 23 floods killed 23 people and destroyed homes, businesses and infrastructure.
