Although people were lined up across the street in Annapolis to speak in the Senate Finance Committee on a bill to raise the minimum wage- Delegate Neil Parrott, of Washington County, has proposed what he called an alternative. While Democratic lawmakers in the state are pushing for a landmark minimum wage increase to $15 an hour by 2023- Parrott filed legislation to scrap the state’s minimum wage altogether and let Maryland counties set their own minimums. Parrott’s alternative bill is similar to other being discussed that would include a provision for different minimum wages depending on geography. The topic was discussed during the recent Cumberland City Council meeting, with city officials embracing the regional approach which could alleviate some of the concerns expressed by business owners. Will this area have prices for goods and services also based on geography? I think not. As an example, Walmart has contracts with suppliers that are set up for national distribution.
Every month there is a notification that Cumberland/Allegany county has the highest gas prices in the state.
If geography is to be the metric for costs, then if wages stay low prices should be also.
