WCI Inmate Death Ruled Homicide

Maryland State Police are investigating the death of a 30-year-old inmate on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at Western Correctional Institution in Cumberland, Maryland as a homicide.

The inmate, who was serving 29 years for murder and weapons charges since 2006, was pronounced dead at 3:15 p.m. at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center in Cumberland. The inmate suffered several puncture wounds after being assaulted by another inmate and a weapon has been recovered.

The inmate’s name is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.

Correctional officers apprehended a 48-year-old inmate serving life for murder, assault and weapons charges, as a suspect. He has not yet been charged. The incident occurred in the recreation hall at 2 p.m.

As with all homicides at Maryland correctional institutions, the Maryland State Police will conduct the investigation.
