West Virginia ban on live poultry gatherings lifted

November 10th, 2015 by WCBC Radio

A ban on gatherings of live poultry in West Virginia has been lifted. The Department of Agriculture announced Commissioner Walt Helmick's decision to lift the ban on Tuesday. The department had implemented the ban in mid-May following an outbreak of avian influenza in other states. The department says in a news release that West Virginia wasn't affected. But commercial poultry is the state's most valuable agricultural sector. While the ban has been lifted, Helmick says poultry producers should still be alert for signs of the disease in their flocks. He says the ban could be imposed again at any time.
