Plans for downtown redesign constructionproject still $5M short

August 9th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

The funding effort remains about $5 million short- and key approvals are needed from the State Highway Administration- but optimism remains high that construction on the redesign of the downtown Cumberland Mall will begin late next spring or early summer. The redesign includes the possibility of a boutique hotel; new underground infrastructure and a return to vehicular traffic and parking on the mall. The Cumberland Economic Development Corporation is overseeing the project. CEDC executive director Paul Kelly, during Thursday’s Downtown Development Commission meeting said the goal remains to begin construction next year although it’s tough to pinpoint a starting date just yet…

what a waste, downtown will never come back the way it was,we have NO workforce comparable to the past, for a town to have anything,,you have to have working people making money so they can spend money!!! profitable business s would pay for their own remodeling, instead of the city looking for handout s …just goes to show what kind of leadership we have!!!!!!

Let’s NOT fix our broken water lines, pot holed filled streets, closed bridges, fund education, etc. etc. etc. But let’s spend millions on changing the color of the mall bricks and switching out the greenery!! And locals wonder why outsider think we’re dim hillbillies.smh
