February 14th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will begin a project to replace the bridge deck and rehabilitate the superstructure of the MD 51 (Industrial Blvd) bridge over MD 61 (Canal Parkway) next week.

The $10.9 million project will begin on Monday, Feb. 17. It is expected to be complete by spring 2022. MDOT SHA contractor Triton Construction, Inc. of St. Albans, West Virginia, will perform the work in the following steps:

  • Crews will install shielding under the bridge
  • Work will continue for up to three weeks
  • Canal Parkway off ramp from MD 51 will be affected
  • Right lane closures as needed

In mid-March, crews will:

  • Begin removing the median prior to the bridge approach
  • Work will continue for up to three weeks
  • Long term, continuous left lane closures will be in effect
  • All traffic will be shifted to the northbound lanes

Approximately 15,000 vehicles travel on this section of MD 51 per day. Motorists are encouraged to allow for additional commuting time.

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on the road and look for highway workers, reduced speed limits, and narrow driving lanes. Drive like you work here and slow down in construction zones.
