Workers Memorial Day held at City Hall

April 28th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

The annual Workers Memorial Day program was held Friday afternoon at Cumberland’s City Hall. The event is held each year to highlight that work place deaths and injuries are still common and continue to be a major concern. According to statistics 150 American workers die from on-the-job accidents and illnesses every day, while thousands more are injured.  A Verso Luke Mill employee was severely injured in an industrial accident at the Luke Mill on April 11. His hand was amputated. The Western Maryland Central Labor Council says that there has been an all-out assault on worker protections. From undermining the enforcement of safety rules, to rolling back and delaying life-saving and health protections, to trying to slash funding for safety training, the administration is consistently prioritizing profits over people.
