WV Legislative Session Extended by One Day as Budget Negotiations Continue

April 8th, 2021 by WCBC Radio

West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice has extended the legislature's 60-day session by one additional day in order to pass a budget, as lawmakers continue to negotiate eliminating the state’s income tax

The extension allow the session to continue through Sunday, but only to consider budget-related matters.

The Senate narrowly approved a revised tax bill which has gone back to the House for consideration. Among other things, the proposal would establish a fund that would receive money from some other revenue streams, including increased tobacco taxes and a tiered severance tax system advocated by the governor.

The bill would initially cut income tax brackets by about half next January. At the same time, sales taxes would rise from the current 6 percent to 8 percent.
