WV Teachers Union Files Injunction to Stop Use of Color-Coded Map

October 6th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

The West Virginia Education Association on Monday filed an injunction challenging the state’s color-coded map of Coronavirus spread that determines school status.

At his media conference yesterday, Governor Jim Justice said he considered the move to be politically motivated…

The WVEA has said it would prefer to use a map developed by researchers at the Harvard Global Health Institute.  West Virginia initially based its map on the Harvard version but frequently made a series of changes that state officials said were meant to adjust for the Mountain State’s relatively rural population.

In its lawsuit, the WVEA asserts that some of the changes have been done to create the false impression that it is safe to return to in-person learning in certain counties that have been designated as "green" on the map's color-coding scale.
