Bishop Walsh Cancels BWGIT

February 25th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

CUMBERLAND – Bob Boyle, the director of BWGIT, has announced that the girls’ tournament for this year has been canceled. As of Friday three teams withdrew due to various reasons and the school was unable to fill those positions. This tournament was scheduled to be hosted for the 26th year March 5 -7 at Bishop Walsh. Tournament Director Bob Boyle said, “It saddens me to see this tournament canceled.  I started 26 years ago for the players of Bishop Walsh, and I feel very bad for current players and new coach Dave Winner, who will miss the opportunity this year. I want to thank all the people who helped over the years to make this event one of the top postseason girls’ tournaments in the country. I especially want to thank Kathy Turnbull who has been my assistant for so many years; she did an excellent job! After 26 years I will not be involved running the BWGIT in the future.”

The BWGIT was originated in 1995 and has hosted many top girls’ basketball teams nationally. Many girls who have played in this tournament have earned NCAA Division 1 scholarships and have had successful careers in college, the WNBA and internationally. “This saddens us at Bishop Walsh with the tradition that has been associated with Bob Boyle, the girls and the BWGIT over many years.” says Principal Dr. Ray Kiddy, “Bishop Walsh hopes to regenerate the BWGIT next year.”

Bishop Walsh would like to announce that next year’s Bob Kirk Invitational Tournament will feature a girls’ basketball component which will include the Bishop Walsh girls team.  “We at the BKIT are excited to add this to our event, said tournament director, Coach Dan Prete, “We feel it will it will help the event grow and expand.” More information will be released soon.

The Bishop Walsh girls’ basketball season has concluded with a 15 and 9 record under first year Coach Dave Winner.
