The Mayor and City Council of Cumberland awarded Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) CV-1 Cares Act funds, in the amount of $89,000, to the
Allegany County Library System (ACLS) to bring broadband and technology accessibility to the South Cumberland area. The funding made possible a new program at ACLS, “Get Connected”, which helps to bridge the digita l divide in our community by providing free internet access and laptop computers to patrons 18 and older. The program begins with an initial 75 hotspots and 90 Chromebooks available to patrons. The South Cumberland Library will begin loaning out Chromebooks and WiFi hotspots starting April 5, kicking off the new service as part of its celebration of
National Library Week.
“The City’s CDBG program is fortunate to have community partners like the
ACLS,” said Lee Borror, Senior Community Development Specialist with the City
of Cumberland, who oversees the CDBG program. “Without the creativity and
cooperation of partners like ACLS, quality and essential programming like the
Chromebook and Hotspots program would be difficult to deliver to the community.
We are very grateful to our partners who bring these programs to fruition.”
