City Council Unanimously Votes to Open Downtown Mall to Vehicular Traffic

The Cumberland Mayor and City Council on Tuesday voted unanimously to accept a recommendation from a consulting firm to open the downtown pedestrian mall to vehicular and bicycle traffic.  Shawn Hershberger, executive director of the Cumberland Economic Development Corporation, presented an overview of the proposal during the work session and the council voted during its regular business meeting. The plan would open the east end of the mall to one-way vehicular traffic flowing from George Street to Centre Street. The west end would be opened for one-way traffic flowing from Mechanic Street to Liberty Street. A number of questions remain as to what the final proposal will look like, concerning matters such as the number and type of parking spaces and fitting in a bike lane as well as a lane for vehicular traffic.
