City & County Continue Talks Over Consolidation Of CEDC

In the planning stages since summer, still no formal agreement and no announced timeline to complete the proposed consolidation of the Cumberland Economic Development Corporation with Allegany County to oversee economic development. The plan now is to merge the city of Cumberland and county economic development activities under one entity. However those talks are moving at an exceedingly deliberate pace with some issues emerging as road blocks- most notably where the consolidated operation would be housed. Commissioner Jake Shade stated publicly that the newly revamped CEDC would operate out of the county office complex on Kelly Road- but that was not greeted warmly by city officials. City Councilman Richard “Rock” Cioni told WCBC News that while he believes the deal will eventually get done- there are some unresolved issues that need to be addressed…

    Allegany County wants to absorb the City of Cumberland anyway so rather than do it in one fell swoop they will do it piecemeal. Today it’s economic development.

    What have they completed? What can they point to as an achievement of the CEDC that has been completed? A brewery in Footer that opened two years behind schedule and without the restaurant that was promised? Why give these two clowns more responsibility when they can’t get done the job they have now!
