Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement Initiative

March 17th, 2021 by WCBC Radio

On Wednesday, from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the Cumberland Police Department partnered with Maryland State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division (CVED) assigned to the Finzel Scalehouse, conducted a joint commercial motor vehicle (CMV) safety operation on I-68 Eastbound from Frostburg, MD through the City of Cumberland.  The operation focused on speeding CMV's in the 45 and 40 MPH speed zones which have resulted in numerous brake fires and commercial motor vehicle (CMV) collisions in an effort to reduce these incidents.

The initiative results are as follows;

28 – CMV's stopped for traffic violations

18 – CMV inspections were conducted by MSP, CVED

4 – OOS Vehicles (vehicles that were taken out of service, off the road)

24 – Citations issued

15 – Warnings issued

1 – SERO (safety equipment repair order) issued

One of the Cumberland Police Department’s goals for 2021 is to enhance commercial vehicle enforcement along Interstate 68, in the city limits of Cumberland.  Our department is aware of the significant problems we have been experiencing with commercial truck crashes, and brake fires along our small section of Interstate 68 as its passes through the City of Cumberland.  We recognize these events are dangerous and create problems that impact our community.
