Comptroller Franchot will spend the day today in Cumberland, beginning at Allegany High School where he will tour the new 145,000-square-foot facility that opened in August. The total state funding for the project was more than $40 million, with the total estimated cost of the school at $55 million.
Next, Mr. Franchot will present a proclamation to Curtis' Coney Island Famous Weiners, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The original owner, George Giatras, launched two restaurants in 1918 (Curtis' Famous Weiners and Coney Island Famous Weiners) within a few blocks of each other. The family consolidated both businesses at the current location in 2000, leading to the name Curtis' Coney Island Famous Weiners.
Later in the afternoon, the Comptroller will tour Friends Aware, a nonprofit that provides support to people over age 21 with developmental disabilities. The organization was founded in 1954 by a group of parents living in the Cumberland area who could not accept the lack of educational opportunities for their children.
