Embassy Theater expects to lose considerable revenue during Downtown Construction

January 30th, 2023 by WCBC Radio

The Embassy Theater is one of the downtown businesses expected to take a fiscal hit as a result of the construction set to begin to redesign the mall- and representatives are seeking reimbursment. The major portion of the project will see the reinstallation of Baltimore Street- but will also involve replacing aging underground utility lines and creating a new streetscape that will include trees, shrubs and redesigned parklets.  Although it is a city of Cumberland project,  the theatre’s secretary and treasurer Don Llewellyn approached the Allegany County Commissioners last week seeking some financial assistance to help make up for the anticipated losses…

Llewellyn requested reimbursement of $12,000. County Commissioners President David Caporale emphasized that it is a city project. He did say that while the  county will do whatever it can to help-  no firm commitments can be made just yet as any financial losses are simply speculation at this time…

The city of Cumberland, the CEDC and the Downtown Development Commission have scheduled a meeting for those business and property owners expected to be impacted by the construction project. That meeting is set for February 23rd at Allegany High School.
