Fatal Accident Wednesday Evening Near Ali Ghan Road And U.S. Route 220

On 12/13/2017 at approximately 7:44 pm, deputies with the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the area of Ali Ghan Road and US Route 220 North for a vehicle accident with injuries reported single vehicle rollover, vehicle in a ditch. Deputies were in the area at the time of dispatch and immediately began searching the area for the vehicle.  Allegany County 911 then advised that accident was on Route 220 north. Deputies located the accident on Route 220 north near Smouses Mill Road.

Deputies located a single vehicle overturned in a ditch with the occupant still inside the vehicle. Deputies were unable to gain access to the driver as he was heavily entrapped in the vehicle. Upon the arrival of the Bedford Road and Baltimore Pike Volunteer Fire Departments and Bowmen’s Addition EMS rescue operations were initiated. Fire and EMS personnel utilized specialized rescue equipment JAWS of Life to extricate the driver. The driver who was identified as Steve Domonkos of Alum Bank Pennsylvania was pronounced dead on the scene by EMS. Domonkos was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore.

Crash Reconstruction Specialists from the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office and Cumberland City Police Department responded to the scene and conducted an investigation. The initial investigation revealed that Domonkos was operating a 2005 Jeep, south on US Route 220 during a moderate snowfall with snow and ice covered roads when he lost control of the vehicle and left the roadway. Crash Reconstruction Specialists believe road conditions and speed were factors in the accident. The accident remains under investigation.

 

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Bedford Road and Baltimore Pike Volunteer Fire Departments, Bowman’s Addition Volunteer Fire Department Ambulance, Allegany County Sheriff’s Office and Cumberland City Police Crash Reconstruction Teams, Maryland State Police and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
