Food program benefits, targeted toward low-income families, are expected to be sent earlier than usual for many people as the federal government wrestles with a partial shutdown. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has been encouraging states to speed up the process for next month, and they have until Jan. 20 to request and implement the early process. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the nation’s food-stamp program, provides food assistance averaging about $125 per person per month to more than 38 million people, according to a research institute, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
