Greene Street Bridge Proposed Renovations to Not Affect Rail Height

November 15th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

In addition to the three West Side bridges that City of Cumberland has been trying to replace- a  a fourth span-  a railroad bridge on Greene Street, is also in poor condition as a result of truck strikes at the low-clearance span and needs addressed. Following the latest meeting between city officials and CSX Transportation, city engineer Bobby Smith reported on proposed renovations for the Greene Street railroad bridge. Unlike the three closed bridges, CSX does admit ownership of that railroad bridge and will pay for any repairs. CSX has said that the repair work may not require raising the tracks. Raising the rail tracks would complicate a rebuild of the Washington Street bridge. That bridge, at 18 feet high, already needs raised nearly four feet to meet CSX bridge height requirements of at least 21 feet, 9 inches. At this point, Smith says it appears that the Greene Street overpass can be modified in such a way that it would not impact the track height….
