High Speed Chase begins in West Virginia, Ends with Arrest in Cumberland

At approximately 1p.m. on Friday Allegany County law enforcement agencies were notified of a vehicle pursuit approaching this jurisdiction. Agencies were notified that the operator, Jared Austin Burgoyne,22 of Cumberland was actively wanted on a felony arrest warrant originating in Barbour County, WV.  It was further advised that the vehicle had apparently struck a law enforcement vehicle in the City of Philippi, WV where the pursuit began. 

In response to the information Deputies and Troopers began to observe Interstate 68 in an attempt to locate the vehicle.  A short time later the vehicle was observed entering Allegany County in the area of Frostburg, MD. A traffic stop was again attempted however; the operator refused to stop and began to flee. During the pursuit the vehicle struck two additional vehicles including one operated by a Deputy Sheriff. 

A short time later, the vehicle exited the interstate in the City of Cumberland where his vehicle came to a stop. The subject fled the area on foot and was taken into custody almost immediately. No injuries occurred throughout the incident.  Several attempts to deflate the vehicle's tires were unsuccessful. The Allegany County Sheriff's Office was assisted in taking Burgoyne into custody by the Maryland State Police, Cumberland City Police, and the Allegany County Narcotics Task Force.  Burgoyne was transported to Allegany County Detention pending a initial appearance before the District Court.

1st Degree Assault – 2 counts

2nd Degree Assault- 2 counts

Fleeing and eluding

Speeding

Speed greater than reasonable

Negligent Driving

Reckless Driving

Hit and Run- 3 counts

 

and numerous other traffic offenses. 

 

Burgoyne is additionally held on the arrest warrant issued in the State of WV
