Hinebaugh Sees Nuclear As Answer For Data Centers

December 8th, 2025 by WCBC Radio

One of the pressing issues facing lawmakers in the coming Maryland General Assembly is the increasing costs for energy.  Maryland currently imports over 40% of the energy it uses and pending data center construction would create an even higher demand.  Garrett County Delegate Jim Hinebaugh spoke about that energy shortage recently and pointed to nuclear as an option…

“The answer to the energy problem is in small modular nuclear reactors. I think that’s going to be the answer. For example, you could put one of those next to the data center – you wouldn’t have any impact on the grid at all. That technology exists; the problem is that that process in Maryland it may take 25 years.”
