Hogan Orders Study On Diversity In Medical Marijuana Industry

April 27th, 2017 by WCBC Radio

Gov. Larry Hogan may not call the special session some lawmakers are asking for, but he is directing an agency to study diversity in Maryland's nascent medical marijuana injury.

On Thursday, Hogan asked the Governor's Office of Minority Affairs to begin a disparity study of the industry. That's in response to outcry from black lawmakers over how dispensary licenses were handed out. No legislation was passed during the legislation to commission a study, so Hogan is commissioning it himself.

The study will include experts from the Maryland Department of Transportation working with the Natalie M. LaPrade Medical Cannabis Commission. The study should be done "as expeditiously as possible," Hogan wrote in a letter authorizing the study.

"As the issue of promoting diversity is of great importance to me and my administration, your office should begin this process immediately in order to ensure opportunities for minority participation in the industry," Hogan wrote.
